Frequently Asked Questions

What is speech therapy and how does it work?

Speech therapy helps people improve their ability to communicate. It can also help with problems like unclear speech, trouble understanding others, or difficulty swallowing. A certified speech-language pathologist (SLP) works with each person to create a treatment plan based on their needs. Therapy may include speaking exercises, games, and helpful tools to improve communication.

What is occupational therapy and how does it work?

Occupational therapy helps children develop the skills they need to participate in everyday activities at home, school, and in the community. It can help with areas such as fine motor skills, handwriting, coordination, sensory processing, self-care, and attention. A certified occupational therapist (OT) works with each child to create an individualized treatment plan based on their strengths and needs. Therapy may include play-based activities, movement, exercises, and strategies to help children become more independent and confident in their daily routines.

Is therapy covered by insurance?

Speech and occupational therapy are often covered by health insurance, especially when it’s medically necessary. We’ll help you verify your benefits and explain your options if you're paying privately or your insurance is out-of-network.

How do I know if my child needs speech or occupational therapy?

If your child is not meeting developmental milestones or is having difficulty with everyday skills, a therapy evaluation may be a good idea. Some signs may include difficulty communicating wants and needs, understanding or following directions, pronouncing sounds clearly, using utensils, getting dressed, holding a pencil, using scissors, coordinating movements, or managing sensory experiences. Every child develops at their own pace, but if you have concerns about your child’s development or participation in everyday activities, we’re here to help! Talk with your pediatrician or contact us to learn more about whether a speech or occupational therapy evaluation may be appropriate.

Is speech and occupational therapy just for children?

No! While we primarily provide pediatric speech and occupational therapy, therapy can benefit individuals of many ages. Speech therapy can help with communication, speech, language, and swallowing needs, while occupational therapy can support skills such as fine motor coordination, daily living activities, sensory processing, and independence. If you or your child are having difficulty participating in everyday activities, therapy may be able to help!

How long does therapy take to work?

The length of therapy depends on the person's age, goals, and the severity of their challenges. Some people see improvement in a few weeks, while others may need ongoing support for several months. Consistency and home practice play a big role in progress.
